Hello. My name is Douglas Herring. I am an attorney here in New Jersey. If you are on Megan’s Law, you already know Megan’s Law is a lifetime requirement. It requires you to register every year. It requires you to register when you move. It requires you to stay in contact with the probation or parole officer for the rest of your life.
When they wrote Megan’s Law, they left a small provision at the very end to allow people maybe to get off of Megan’s Law. The requirements to get off are straightforward. It can only be one sex offense. It cannot be aggravated or by force and you have to have 15 years offense free and that means any crimes; shoplifting, drug crimes, any crimes.
If you have 15 years since you were either convicted or released, you are eligible. If you are eligible, a superior court judge has to decide that you no longer pose a threat to others. And that is what you and I have to do. We will show the judge that you no longer pose a threat to others and you should be released from the requirement of registering under Megan’s Law.
If you think you are eligible, give us a call.
